Ich weiß es nicht, aber ich denke mir, daß Bush ein religiöses Lieblingslied hat.

Ich tippe mal auf:

Würde ich anders sehen, schließlich ist das eindeutig ein schwarzes Freiheitslied...
Da GWB aber zur südstaatlichen Ünterdrücker-Kaste gehört, wird er wohl soetwas kaum goutieren.

JA, es ist AUCH ein schwarzes Freiheitslied, gewiß.

Es gab ja in der Nordarmee ab einem bestimmte Zeitpunkt auch schwarze Soldaten, oft entlaufene Sklaven. Für die hatte die Strophe:
"As he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free"
sicher eine ganz besondere Bedeutung. Denn wenn sie gefangen wurden, drohte ihnen der Tod, anders als ihren weißen Kameraden.

ABER es wurde von Julia Ward Howe geschrieben, einer weißen Dichterin, deren Mann in der Sanitätskomission der Nordstaaten arbeitete. Und dieses Lied hat sie geschrieben, nachdem sie diesen bei einer Inspektionfahrt durch mehrer Krankenbarracken in verschiedenen Lagern begleitet hatte.
In der Tat wurde es in der Nacht in Eile niedergeschrieben, noch auf dem Papier der Sanitätskomission, das gerade zur Hand war und am morgen vollendet unter dem Eindruck der an ihrem Haus vorbeiziehenden Truppen, die ins Gefecht gingen.

Es ist also an sich kein spezielles Lied der Neger, wenn die Verfasserin möglicherweise auch an die Negersoldaten gedacht haben mag.
